Good morning all,

 

It is sunny and good weather this morning and

weather forecast said it will be relatively warm

for a while here in Tokyo. Daytime highs will be

about 15-17 degrees.

Here is today's english!

sums of money on research and development."

( R&Dへの 投資が 競争力の 秘訣! )

 

どうして彼らは競争力があるのだと思う？」「主な理由としては、

研究開発に多額の投資をしているということが挙げられます。

 

Words,Phrases & Patterns

> make ; (第5文型で) ...を ...する・させる.

> competitive ; 競争の, 競争の厳しい
> for the most part ; = mostly 大部分は

> substantial ; (量,程度)が 相当な,

> ...sum of ; ..な金額の
 

ここで spend substantial sums of money on は

spend A on B....の 表現で  A (時間, お金)を Bに

使うの 意味です.

 

参考1, spend A ...ingを よく 使いますが, Bの 対象に

名詞の時は onを, ...するのに と 動詞+目的語

で使う場合は...ing (同名詞)を 使うことです。

 

参考2, (時間/お金)を...に浪費する との意味では wasteを

使います。

 

spend/waste A ...ing  ; ..するのに 時間/お金を 使う/浪費する

spend/waste A on B  ; B(事物)に 時間/お金を 使う/浪費する

 

日本語で;

...に 時間/お金を　使う/浪費する　と 表現したい 時は 

この 表現を 使ってみて　ください。

 

例えば;

(a) You should not spend so much money on cosmetics

(化粧品に そんなに 沢山の お金を 使っては だめ！)

(b) I wasted my time doing nothing

(なにも しないで 時間の 浪費した)

(c) Don't spend much time on it

(それに　沢山の時間をつかうな!)
