morning temperature of 4 degrees and daytime highs of

10 degrees.

We had to undergo a major transformation, during which

scores of people were laid off, but without such a

restructuring effort, we could not have survived.

( restructuring - リストラ !  )

 

我々は大きな変革を迫られ、その間に多数の人々が解雇されました。

しかし、そのようなリストラの努力がなければ我々は生き延びることが

できなかったでしょう。

 

Words,Phrases & Patterns

> undergo ; (試練,変化,手術,試験などを) 経験する, 受ける

> major ; (重要性, 深刻さなどが 相対的に)大きい,

> transformation ; 変化 ; transform 変化させる
> scores of ; (名詞の前で) 非常に多数の

> lay....off ; (労働者)を 一時 解雇する ; layoff 一時解雇 

> restructure ; (組織などを) 構築し直す

> survive ; (事故,危機から)抜けて生き残る
 

ここで without は "なかったら" の意味で   if 節代わりに

使われ 本来は If it had not been for....です.

後ろの節が could not have survived...で 現在完了なので,

仮定法 過去完了 表現であることが分かります, if節は

had Vppになりますね。

 

without....は ; (物, 問題などが)...なければ, ....なかったらば などで

よく用いられます。

 

(物,問題などが)

(今) なければ ; without = if it were not for + 名詞

(過去) なかったら ; without = if it had not been for + 名詞

    

日本語で;

(現在)...が なければ, (過去)...が なかったら...と　言いたい時は

withoutを　つかってみてください。.

 

例えば; 

 

(仮定法 過去の without ) 

(a) without the fact that he is senior to me, I would punch him in the face.

= If it were not for the fact that he is senior to me, ..............

(仮定法過去完了の without )

(b) Without your help, I would never have made such progress

= If it had not been for your help,.................
