08/Dec/26/Fri Today's English ( 英語の丁寧な表現 - 仮定法で 2/4 )

Good morning all,

Happy★ 。 · ˚ ˚ ˛ ˚ ˛ · ·
Holidays! 。 。° 。 ° ˛ ˚ ˛

This is the last one for this year and it will be resumed from
2009/Jan/5th Monday again!

So strong winds through the night and it has brought the
first snows in Osaka but not in Tokyo yet. It is 4.5 degrees
this morning and during the daytime it will be about 7 degrees
here in Tokyo.

Here is Today's English

Seq# 50 (unit 329)

" I wonder if you could help me with my homework?
I am really stuck. No matter how I read it, this paragraph
does not seem to make sense."
( I wonder if you could....

Words,Phrases & Patterns
> I wonder if you could/would ; ...
> help A with B ; A(人)의B(作業)を 手伝う
> no matter how S V ; 〜に関係なく、たとえ〜でも
> paragraph ; 段落
> seem to 動詞 ; ...

I wonder if you could help me....

I wonder if ....
Could/Would you....

I wonder If you could....
I wonder If you would........

" I wonder If this painting is a genuine Van Gogh? ".

日本語で;

I wonder if you could.......
I wonder if you would......

参考で, Could you....が Would you.....

例えば;

(a) Can you help me with my homework?
(b) Will you help me with my homework?

(c) Could you please help me with my homework?
(d) Would you please help me with my homework?

(e) I would be grateful if you could help me with my homework
(f) I would appreciate if you could help me with my homework

(g) I wonder if you could help me with my homework?
(h) I wonder if you would help me with my homework?

Have a great day today!

2009 - No challenge, No chance !!

08/Dec/25/Thu Today's English ( 英語の丁寧な表現 - 仮定法で )

Good morning all,

MERRY★ 。 · ˚ ˚ ˛ ˚ ˛ · ·
CHRISTMAS 。 。° 。 ° ˛ ˚ ˛

It is a bit cold this morning with the morning temparature of
5.5 degrees but it will be getting warmer during the daytime
with 15 degrees. No snow last night here in Tokyo.

Here is Today's English

Seq# 49 (unit 328)

The note said, " I would be grateful if you could promptly
deliver the commodities listed below, along with the
usual goods."
( I would be grateful if you could....

Words,Phrases & Patterns
> along with ; ...

I would be grateful if you could.....

相手に 依頼する時;

Can you.......?
Will you.......?

Could you......?
Would you.....?

....If you could........,
....if you would.......,

参考で, Could you....?が Would you.....?

日本語で;

I would be grateful if you could/would .......
I would appreciate if you could/would .......

例えば;

(a) Can you help me with my homework?
(b) Will you help me with my homework?

(c) Could you please help me with my homework?
(d) Would you please help me with my homework?

(e) I would be grateful if you could help me with my homework
(f) I would appreciate if you could help me with my homework

Have a great day today!

08/Dec/24/Wed Today's English ( If 節代わりの without - ..

Good morning all,

MERRY 。 · ˚ ˚ ˛ ˚ ˛ · ·
CHRISTMAS 。 。° 。 ° ˛ ˚ ˛

It is sunny and cold this morning here in Tokyo with the
morning temperature of 4 degrees and daytime highs of
10 degrees.

Here is today's english!

Seq# 48 (unit 321) :

We had to undergo a major transformation, during which
scores of people were laid off, but without such a
restructuring effort, we could not have survived.

Words,Phrases & Patterns

If it had not been for....です.
後ろの節が could not have survived...

without....

(今) なければ ; without = if it were not for + 名詞
(過去) なかったら ; without = if it had not been for + 名詞

日本語で;

例えば;

(a) without the fact that he is senior to me, I would punch him in the face.
= If it were not for the fact that he is senior to me, ..............
(b) Without your help, I would never have made such progress
= If it had not been for your help,.................

08/Dec/23/Tue Today's English ( 仮定法 過去完了形 )

Good morning all,

MERRY 。 · ˚ ˚ ˛ ˚ ˛ · ·
CHRISTMAS 。 。° 。 ° ˛ ˚ ˛

Can you believe it? it is 19.5-14.7 = 4.8 degrees this morning
here in Tokyo. It is dark cloudy sky and much much colder
than yesterday and it will be about 10 degrees during daytime.

Here is today's english!

Seq# 47 (unit 316) :

The last train was due in 20 minutes and I made it to the
station just in time to catch it. If I had missed it, I would
have had to take a taxi home.
( If I had missed it ..; (昨日夜) 終電 乗り遅れたら!  )

Words,Phrases & Patterns
I made it! )
> in time ; 間に合って ; on time ちょうど間に合って
> catch ; ....

ここで if I had missed it, I would have had to は 文法的に

과거의것을 가정할때는 ; if 過去完了形 動詞, would have Vp.p....

日本語で;

例えば;

(a) If it had not been so expensive, I would have bought it.

(b) If we had acted sooner, things might have been different

08/Dec/22/Mon Today's English ( 仮定法、直説法 )

Good morning all,

★MERRY★ 。 · ˚ ˚ ˛ ˚ ˛ · ·
CHRISTMAS 。 。° 。 ° ˛ ˚ ˛

Can you believe it? it is 19.5 degrees this morning
here in Tokyo. it is fine weather but from yesterday
the strong but very warm winds has been making
the temparature increaed upto 19.5 degrees this morning
and daytime highs wiil be about 20 degrees.

Here is today's english!

Seq# 46 (unit 314)

" If I were you, I would make better of it, " Betty suggested.
Amy reacted with rage, "Mind your own business. it has
nothing to do with you."
( If I were you ..; ...

Words,Phrases & Patterns
> make use of ; ...
> make better use of ; より うまく 活用する
> mind ; ...
> mind your own business ; = ( it is ) none of your business
> have nothing to do with ; ....

ここで if I were you, I would は 文法的に 仮定法 過去 の 表現です。

過去のことを仮定する時は ; if 動詞 過去完了形, would have Vp.p....

If it is necessary,

日本語で;

例えば;

直説法
(a) If it is necessary, I can come at once
(b) If you have any trouble, give me a call

(a) If you won 300 million yen in the lottery, would you still work?
(b) If you were older, you could understand

ここで while on duty は 本来 while (we are) on duty で
while/when/whether の 副詞節で 前節(主節)の主語が

A is different from B

08/Dec/16/Tue Today's English ( I hope not.....)

Good morning all,

Let's start Tuesday with vigor!

it is perfectly blue and clean sky this morning here
in Tokyo. it is still cold with morning lows of 3.6 degrees
and daytime highs will be about 11 degrees, which is 2
degrees higher than yesterday.

Here is today's english!

Seq# 42 (unit 387)

"If the recession drags on, Wages will be frozen or
lowered." " I hope not. Wage earners and salaried
workers alike already find it hard to make ends meet."
I really hope! )

Words,Phrases & Patterns
> lower ; ..
> A and B alike ; Aも Bも 同様に
> find it....to 動詞 ; ...
> make (both) ends meet ;

ここで I hope not は I hope (that) wages will not be frozen

hope that 節
suppose that 節
be afraid that 節

参考で, I suppose that...

日本語で;

例えば;
(a) " It does not often happen", " No, I suppose not "
( I suppose that it does not often happen )
