The last train was due in 20 minutes and I made it to
the station just in time to catch it. If I had missed it,
I would have had to take a taxi home.
" 終電は 20分後に 到着の予定だったが、私はその電車の
時間に遅れないように到着して電車に乗るのに成功した。
もし乗り遅れていたら、タクシーで家まで帰らねばならない
ところだった。 ( 平常 電車時間に 遅れないように！）
Words,Phrases & Patterns
> The train is due ; 電車が 到着予定である。。
> make it to...; ..の目的地に 到着するのに 成功する.
> make it to...; ..の目的地に 到着するのに 成功する.
> take a taxi home ; タクシーで 帰る
ここで in time は 時間に間に合って, 時間に余裕もって の
意味です. 時間に間に合って到着する という時 よく
使います. 一方、 on timeは ちょうど その時間に, 約束時間に
びったり。。の意味ですので、区別して使いましょう！
日本語で, (電車/約束時間に) 少し 余裕もって 間に合うように
到着する と 言いたい時は in time を, その時間にちょうど びったり
到着する と 言う時は on timeを 使って みて ください。
例えば,
a. The train arrived right on time.( 電車が ちょうど 予定の時間に 到着した )
b. Will we be in time for the six o'clock train?
( 我々 ６時 電車に 間に合えるかしら? )
c. The ambulance got there just in time .
( ambulance 間に合って そこに 到着した )
