Seq 355 ( unit 16  It を用いた表現 ) : lesson 22 < it.....that ....の強調構文 >

 

今日は ' It is ...... that ~~ ' の強調構文で, ' ...となってようやく.....する' の意味を表す

It is not until ....that~~ の文章を勉強しましょう.

 

' 彼女の詞は彼女が 30才になってようやく認めてもらった ' を英語にすると,

 

(a) Her poetry did not become recognized until she turned 30.

 

--> It ......that....の強調構文にすると,

 

(b) It was not until she turned 30 that her poetry became recognized.

 

直訳すると, 彼女が 30才になるまで彼女を詞は認められなかった.

すなわち、彼女の詞は彼女が 30才になってようやく認めてもらった.

 

例文>

 

" The gifted poet stood out in her youth, and yet it wasn't

until she turned 30 that her sophisticated poetry became 

widely recognized "

 

その才能ある詩人は若い頃から目立っていたが、彼女の洗練された

詞が幅広く認められるようになったのは30才になってからだった.

gifted ; (形) 才能がある,

poet ; (名) 詩人

poetry ; （名) 集合的に 詞, poem は詞一つ一つ.

stand out ; (動) 目立つ,

in one't youth ; 若い頃に

and yet ; ( = but ) しかし

turn ; (動) (色, 味, 年, 職業などが) ...になる,変わる 

sophisticated; (形) 洗練された, 複雑な,

recognize ; (動) ..を認める

 

説明> 上の例文のように, ' It is not until...that.... '  表現で,

' ..となってようやく...する'の表現を使ってみましょう!
