[ 今日は hardly any, hardly ever を もう一度 整理して ]
[ " hardly ~ when[before]..... " の 熟語を 勉強しましょう ]
(a) hardly [scarcely, barely] any + 名詞 ; 數量の 少ないことを表す ; ほとんど....なし.
(b) hardly [scarcely, barely] ever + 動詞 ; 回數の 少ないこと表す ; めったに......しない.
例文;
(a) There is hardly any doubt that He will succeed. 彼が成功することには 疑いの余地が
ほとんどない.
(b) He hardly ever read books. かれはめったに本を いまない.
1. hardly[scarcely ~ before[when] ......; .....する前に[時] やっと ....した.
例文; We had hardly got into the building before[when] it began to rain.
( 雨が ふる前に やっと その buildingの中に 入った )
この時の hardly, scarcely は " やっと " の 意味で 理解すればいいです,
本来の 意味は 後ろから 訳して " ...する前に[時] やっと ..した" ですが,前から訳して "
....するとすぐに で訳される場合が多いです.
後ろから 訳 ; ( 雨が 降り時始める前に 私は やっと その buildingに 入った )
前から 訳 ; ( 我々が そのbuildingに 入ったらすぐに 雨がふり始めた )
例文; I had hardly said the word when he entered.
[ 皆さん, ここで よくみると, when[before] 節の 動詞は 過去形で, 主節の動詞は 過去完了
であることが分かります, 彼が 入った(過去時点) 以前に すでに 話をした時制との差異を 表すために過去完了を用います. このように, hardly[scarcely]......when[before] は 過去のことを 表す時に
よく使います, この場合 主節は かこ完了, when[before]節は 過去形に なります ]

1. I had hardly switched on the microwave oven when all the lights went out.
( 過去完了, 過去形 )!

参考; ....するとすぐに... ; の 英語表現には つぎの ２つ 表現も あります.
(a) as soon as ; As soon as you arrived there, please call me.
(b) no sooner than ; They had no sooner finished washing the dishes than their father came home.
